Interracial Couples, families, the full works!
*Inhales deeply* With a sensitive topic as this, where does one begin... But at some point, it SHOULD be tackled. My boyfriend and I are having issues, where race is concern. No, not between us, but us against the world (Or should I say, the racist cavemen who dwell in it)! My sweetheart is of East Indian and Caucasian mix, while I'm (a bit more complicated) African, (French) Caucasian and Carib Indian (Ameriandian) heritage. When we venture out together, we deal with looks of bewilderment, disappointment and even, get this, SCORN. The people in question can be asked if they are racist (indirectly) and they may quickly respond with a no, or a slow shrug, but their facial reactions when caught offguard, tells another tale. How sad, in this day and age and in the Caribbean, where every country is so multi-cultured and multi-racial diverse, that we have to suffer from discrimination of just being a simple couple in love. We go out like any other couple, we go to the beach, go to lunch/ dinner and all the works... We try to be as normal as possible, but it's hard for us, especially me who can't take the staring, to be frowned upon like freaks! Yes, CAVEMEN, deal with it. One day, (with God's permission/ blessings) we would love to get married and, OMG, have babies! LOVE AND PROCREATION HAS NO BOUNDARIES. I now see what my mom and dad had to endure, back in the mid 70's when they newly hooked up! Dang... My mom always was worried about my siblings and I, how well we would fare out there in the world. Being caught in the "middle" was tough for my sis and I, growing up and going to school and being bullied by all races around us! My brothers escaped because 1) Boys only care about playing football, etc., and race doesnt matter and 2) They look almost like your typical African kids. My sis always stood out in a crowd, even to this day! She appears to be White chick with very long, Afro-textured hair. Sigh... Thinking about what we endured, it's plain to see. Kids will be kids and no matter what part of the world they are in, there will be bullying/ taunts... When will that end? All I know is, when it's time for MY kids to go to school, they wont endure the same fate. Sometimes, I stop and ponder, 'what century are we in, again?' Just because it feels sooo much like back in slavery days at times and the early 1900's... People need to get over this race and colour thing and remember, we were created in God's image and it's just one race: The Human Race.
